The Ins and Outs of Lumber & Lawn

Lumber & Lawn, established during 1996 as Paarl Power Products, was formed by brothers Azer & Jody van Zyl. Azer coming from a computer and business background and Jody being an extensive user of Stihl products in lumber contracting, combined forces due to a need for an established business that concentrates on the effective servicing of machines. The first 6 years was dedicated to position the company in the Drakenstein area as a STIHL Service Dealership with concentration on “service”. Their wide client base has later pushed them into servicing other brands of products in the small plant industry.

During 2003 the brothers parted, with Azer taking control and since 2004 a total restructuring of the business took place and the name changed to Lumber & Lawn, where managers were placed and trained to take the business from an (EME) emerging small enterprise, local orientated business to a medium enterprise, (QSE) qualifying small enterprise, business concentrating internally on the 3 major business entities (workshop / sales / logistics) and externally in appointing agents in the faraway towns where no professional service dealers exist. Lumber & Lawn have committed themselves to work with the major Agricultural Co-ops (Kaap Agri, Overberg Agri and Vilko) in the rural towns of the Western Cape in supplying and servicing of machines / spares / knowledge. Thus we moved into the field of distributing to agents and smaller service dealers, but retailing to our existing customer base.

During 2016, 8 co-workers were invited to take up shares in the company and currently 6 of them are in key-positions within Lumber & Lawn, furthering the business with their respective expertise, to become a major player in the distribution and retail / service of small plant to customers in the Western Cape. Lumber & Lawn are affiliated with (OPPASA) Outdoor Power Product Association of South Africa, formerly known as “The Lawnmower Association”, and (MIOSA) Motor Industry Ombudsman of South Africa. We subscribe to the Codes of Good Conduct as laid down by OPPASA, MIOSA and our Suppliers. Lumber & Lawn has accreditation to supply to government (registered Central Supply Database – MAAA0010417; Western Cape Supplier Database – CYB27PTTRW) and numerous semi-state organisations.
